Silvicultural System

Silvicultural System

A method of silviculture procedure worked out in accordance with accepted set of silvicultural principles in which forest crops are tended, harvested, and replaced by new crops of distinctive forms.

Objective of silviculture system is to achieve Normal forest and Sustained yield.

Choice of Silvicultural System

  • Light demander: Clear felling System
  • Shade bearing: Shelterwood System
  • Good coppice: Coppice System
  • Good seed yielding: High forest System
  • Long seed interval Species: Selection System
  • Area with woody dense growth: Selection System

Classification of Silvicultural System

Silvicultural systems have been classified in a variety of ways. The most commonly used classification is based primarily on the mode of regeneration. It is further clasiified according to the pattern of felling carried out in the forest crop. According to the method of regeneration, silvicultural systems are classified as:

  1. High forest systems
  1. Coppice systems

High Forest System:

Those silvicultural system in which the regeneration is normally of seedling origin, either natural or artificial or a combination of both and the rotation is generally long. The high forest systems are further classified on the basis of pattern of felling and the mode of regeneration as well. A systematic classification of these systems is given below:

1.Systems of concentrated regenerations

  • Clear felling systems

  1. Clear felling system
  2. The clear strip system
  3. The Alternate strip

  • Shelterwood System

  1. Uniform shelterwood system
  2. Group shelterwood system
  3. Strip shelterwood system
  4. Irregular shelterwood system
  5. Indian irregular shelterwood system

2. System of diffused regeneration

  • Selection System

  1. Single tree Selection
  1. Group Selection

3. Accessory System

  1. Two storeyed high forest system
  1. High forest with reserve system

Coppice Systems

The silvicultural system in which the crop originates mainly from coppice and the rotation is short is called coppice system. It is also known as low forest system.

  1. Simple coppice system
  1. Coppice of two rotation system
  1. Shelterwood coppice ystem
  1. Coppice with standard system
  1. Coppice with reserve system
  1. Coppice selection system
  1. The pollard system
